Moret-sur-Loing

Artist: Carl Anderson (1888-1952)

Medium: Oil on Panel, dated 1949

Dimensions: 25” x 28.5”

This is an impressionist-style oil painting of Moret sur Loing. The palette is bright and sunny. Pops of yellow-green foliage from the trees, plus a vivid yellow patch at the lower left, add energy and echo in the water’s reflections. The brushwork is loose and painterly, with thick, visible strokes and impasto in places, especially in the sky and buildings. Details are suggested rather than rendered precisely, and the reflections in the water are broken into short horizontal dabs of color, a classic impressionist approach. It is more of a plein-air study, capturing the impression of light on a town rather than an exact portrait of it.

About the Artist: Born in Sweden, Andersson studied at the Valand School of Fine Arts (1909–1910) and the Wilhelmson Painting School (1912–1916). He spent a formative period living and working in Paris between 1927 and 1929, heavily influenced by French artists. He painted broad, expressive representations of local Scandinavian life and nature, particularly focusing on regions like Skåne and Blekinge, as well as coastal fishing villages. His pieces are held in major public collections, including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Malmö Museum.

This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.

All artwork is sold as found, and we always carefully photograph and highlight any notable signs of age. In most cases, the frame and hanging materials are in their original state. Please take care to reinforce, repair or replace brackets and hanging wires or strings before you hang them on your wall, as we are not responsible for any breakage or damage after the item leaves our care.
