Blue Vase with Florals

Artist: Ilona Klára Donáth-Boman (1912-1999)

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Dimensions: 21” x 25”

This beautiful still life centers on a lush arrangement of large, full-bloomed peonies in soft pastel shades—predominantly creamy white, pale pink, and light blush tones, with one deeper pink bud near the top left. The painting has an impressionistic or post-impressionistic feel due to the visible brushwork and emphasis on color and form over fine detail. The flowers are rendered with thick, expressive brushstrokes that give the petals a voluminous, almost sculptural texture. Dark green leaves provide strong contrast and frame the blooms, adding depth and structure to the bouquet.

The vase is a striking deep cobalt blue with swirling accents of gold, brown, and touches of red, suggesting a decorative, possibly ceramic or glazed design. It sits on a warm, golden-yellow table surface that occupies the lower portion of the canvas.

The cool, muted teal-blue background is softly blended to create a calm, atmospheric setting that makes the flowers and vase stand out prominently. The overall color palette is harmonious and serene, balancing cool blues with warm floral tones.
