Cathedral Landscape
Cathedral Landscape
Artist: Wilhelm Matton (1901-1971)
Medium: Oil on Panel
Dimensions: 17” x 20”
This is a small, impressionistic oil painting on panel, framed in a distressed, two-tone wood molding (pale inner edge and a muted gray outer band with gold highlights). The scene is a quiet rural landscape rendered in loose, expressive brushstrokes and a subdued, almost nostalgic palette of ochres, sage greens, and dusty blues.
In the foreground, golden wheat stubble and scattered haystacks catch the late-summer light, their forms softly blurred as if seen through a haze of heat or memory. A narrow dirt path winds from the lower left corner, drawing the eye toward the middle ground where a cluster of low, red-roofed farm buildings nestles against dark green trees. The largest tree, broad and rounded, anchors the composition just left of center.
Rising above the rooftops in the distance, the twin spires of a Gothic-style church (painted in muted brick red) pierce a pale, cloud-streaked sky. The spires are the sharpest vertical accents in an otherwise horizontal, earth-bound scene, giving the painting a gentle sense of depth and quiet reverence.
The overall mood is serene and slightly melancholic. Light is handled with restraint; there are no harsh shadows or brilliant highlights, just a diffused glow that unifies the canvas.
About the Artist: Wilhelm Matten was a Swedish photographer, gilder and painter. He was the nephew of Ida Matton, a prominent Swedish sculptor. He studied at Edward Berggren's painting school in Stockholm and during study trips to Germany, England, France and Belgium. He exhibited several times in Gävle, including at Gävle City Hall, and he participated in group exhibitions with the Gävleborg County Art Association and the Roslagen Artists' Guild. His art consists of flower still lifes, genre motifs, landscapes, often with snow.
This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear. All artwork is sold as found, and we always carefully photograph and highlight any notable signs of age.
