Coast and House
Coast and House
Artist: Holger J. Jensen (1900-1966)
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 25.5” x 28.5”
This post-impressionist painting depicts a rural or coastal setting with a cluster of small houses or cottages nestled among rolling hills or dunes. A body of water (possibly a lake or the sea) stretches across the upper third of the canvas, rendered in cool blues and greys. Muted and earthy tones dominate—soft greens, ochres, pale yellows, lavenders, and greys—creating a calm, almost dreamy atmosphere. The colors are applied in broad, loose brushstrokes with visible texture, emphasizing mood over realism. The scene conveys a serene and slightly magical mood with a strong sense of place and atmosphere, achieved through bold color blocks and expressive brushwork.
About the Artist: Holger J. Jensen was born in Denmark 1900-1966, and died in Bretagne in France. Jensen was educated at the Royal Art Academy in 1921 and a pupil of Viggo Brandt and Ejnar Nielsen. Later he was a pupil of Axel Jörgensen from 1922-1930. Jensen was strongly influenced by Cézanne and Edvard Weie. Jensen experimented with different forms and shades and is known for both his expressive and cubistic sceneries. In 1928 Jensen co-founded the art union “Decembristerne”, a forum for young artists. “Decembristerne “ is still open to this day and is now a well known modern exhibition. Jensen became an art teacher at the Royal Art Academy where he influenced other artists like Helle Thorborg, Erik Lagoni Jacobsen, Vera Myhre and Alfred P. Hartmann. Jensen has been exhibited all around Denmark and in Sweden, Norway, Germany, Italy and United States.
This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear. All artwork is sold as found, and we always carefully photograph and highlight any notable signs of age.
