Coastal Glance
Nautical Abstract
Artist: Erik Kylberg (1882-1947)
Medium: Oil on Panel, Dated ‘40
Dimensions: 27” x 31”
This painting is a loosely rendered landscape with an expressive, impressionist feel.
In the foreground, rough, textured brushstrokes form uneven ground—patches of ochre, rust, olive green, and gray suggesting earth, grass, and stone rather than clearly defined objects. A pale, winding streak cuts through this area and guides the eye into the scene.
Beyond that, the land opens into a broad, yellow-green field that stretches toward a calm band of blue water in the distance. The water is painted simply, creating a quiet horizontal pause between land and sky.
On the right side, a dark green mass of foliage or trees rises vertically, anchoring the composition and adding contrast to the more open left side. The sky above is muted and overcast, with layered strokes of soft gray, cream, and blue that suggest low clouds and diffused light.
Overall, the painting feels atmospheric and intuitive rather than detailed. The emphasis is on color relationships, texture, and mood—evoking a breezy, poignant coastal or lakeside landscape captured in a fleeting moment.
About the Artist: Erik Gustafson Kylberg (1882-1947) was a Swedish painter and customs official. His mother was Baroness Eleonora von Essen, and one of his 6 siblings was Henrik Kylberg, a notable Swedish businessman .
Erik Kylberg came into contact with art at an early age, and like his older brother Carl, he received instruction in watercolor painting from his aunt Regina Kylberg at a young age. He had a cottage on the island of Hättan, and it was here in solitude that he began to paint.
In 1939 he had his first exhibition up in Norrland, and in the spring of 1944 he appeared together with Hans Norsbro at Lorensberg's art salon in Gothenburg. Kylberg is represented at Västergötlands Museum , among others.
This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.
All artwork is sold as found, and we always carefully photograph and highlight any notable signs of age. In most cases, the frame and hanging materials are in their original state. Please take care to reinforce, repair or replace brackets and hanging wires or strings before you hang them on your wall, as we are not responsible for any breakage or damage after the item leaves our care.
