Landscape at Dusk

Artist: Helge Cardell (1902-1972)

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Dimensions: 18” x 30”

This serene landscape oil painting captures a peaceful, rolling rural scene in a soft, impressionistic style with loose, expressive brushwork typical of mid-20th-century Swedish painting.

In the foreground, a solitary tree with a gently curving trunk stands slightly off-center, its foliage rendered in dappled layers of green, olive, and subtle bluish tones. The ground around it is a patchwork of warm earthy colors — soft pinks, ochres, and muted greens — suggesting a meadow or field with hints of wildflowers or low vegetation, including some delicate red/pink accents near the base.

Behind the tree, the mid-ground gently rises into undulating hills or fields in deeper greens and teals, leading the eye to a distant line of dark blue-black forest or dense woodland along the horizon. The sky above is a calm, pale blue-green with wispy, diffused light, giving the whole scene a hazy, atmospheric quality — evoking a quiet late afternoon or overcast day in the Swedish countryside.

The artist uses a restrained yet harmonious palette of greens, blues, and warm earth tones, applied with visible, textured strokes that create a sense of movement and depth without sharp details. It's painterly and atmospheric rather than photorealistic, emphasizing mood and light over precise botanical accuracy. Overall, this is a tranquil, contemplative piece — intimate in scale yet expansive in feel — perfect for bringing a touch of quiet nature into any space.

He began painting in 1920 and studied at the Skåne Painting School in Malmö from 1928 to 1930 and during trips to the Netherlands, England, Germany and France.
