River in Stockholm
Artist: Alfred Hedlund (1884-1930)
Medium: Oil on Canvas, Affixed to panel
Dimensions: 15” x 18.5”
This lively, expressive harbor scene is executed in a bold, post-impressionist style that captures a bustling yet intimate coastal harbor or fishing village. In the foreground and middle ground, several boats are moored in calm, reflective green water. Behind them rises a cluster of tightly packed buildings—houses and sheds with warm reddish-brown and terracotta roofs—clinging to the shoreline. A steep, tree-covered hill dominates the background, with larger structures visible at its crest.
Hedlund employs a rich, heightened color scheme that prioritizes emotional impact over strict realism. Deep emerald greens define the water, contrasting with warm earth tones in the buildings and shoreline. The trees and hills are rendered in dark, lush greens with blue undertones for shadow and volume. The sky is a muted, overcast gray-blue with creamy highlights, suggesting a hazy or cloudy day. Accents of white, blue, and red on the boats add lively punctuation.
