Serene Valley
Serene Valley
Artist: Per Englund (1905-1988)
Medium: Oil on Canvas, Dated 1942
Dimensions: 26” x 32”
This oil painting captures a serene autumnal landscape in a realistic yet softly impressionistic style. The composition features a gently winding dirt path in the foreground, cutting through golden-yellow fields dotted with sparse, leafless trees and low bushes that evoke the crispness of fall. A narrow blue river snakes through the middle ground, reflecting the sky and bordered by lush green meadows. Scattered along the riverbank are a few quaint farm buildings: white houses with dark roofs, a small red barn, and possibly a church steeple in the distance, suggesting a rural village. The background rises to a prominent, tree-covered hill or low mountain in shades of blue-green, under a vast sky with light, fluffy clouds and hints of pastel pinks near the horizon, implying either dawn or dusk. The brushwork is loose and textured, with blended colors creating a sense of depth and tranquility, reminiscent of Scandinavian or Northern European pastoral scenes.
About the Artist: Englund was a Swedish painter, who made several public murals in Swedish schools and institutions. He was trained in Sweden and Paris - after which he traveled extensively in Europe in the late 40s and 50s. He is now in several Swedish regional museums, including Länsmuseet Gävleborg
This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.
