Spring Bouquet

Artist: Knut Irwe

Medium: Oil on Panel

Dimensions: 23” x 18.5”

The painting centers on a clear blue-tinted glass vase filled with a lush, overflowing arrangement of flowers. The background is an abstract, softly blended field of greens, yellows, and oranges, creating a glowing, atmospheric effect without any specific details. This work is executed in an expressive, loose Impressionist or Post-Impressionist style, with visible, energetic brushstrokes and thick impasto in places. Irwe prioritizes color and light over precise botanical detail — the flowers are suggested through patches of color rather than rendered realistically. The composition has a lively, spontaneous feel, with the bouquet appearing full and almost bursting out of the vase.

The painting radiates joy and abundance. The loose handling and bold color choices give it a fresh, modern-feeling energy while still echoing classic floral still life traditions. The gold frame with white matting complements the warm tones of the painting nicely.

About the Artist: Knut Irwe was a Swedish painter born on May 2, 1912, in Trolleholm, Skåne (southern Sweden). He died in 2002. Irwe began with three years of self-directed artistic study before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He is often associated with the Göteborgskoloristerna (Gothenburg Colourists), a group known for their vibrant, expressive use of color in landscape and figurative painting, though his style evolved over time.

Early in his career, Irwe worked in a more figurative mode influenced by the Gothenburg Colourist tradition, producing landscapes, coastal scenes, farm motifs, and still lifes with bold, luminous colors and visible brushwork. Over the decades, his practice shifted toward greater abstraction while retaining a strong sense of color and composition.

This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.

All artwork is sold as found, and we always carefully photograph and highlight any notable signs of age. In most cases, the frame and hanging materials are in their original state. Please take care to reinforce, repair or replace brackets and hanging wires or strings before you hang them on your wall, as we are not responsible for any breakage or damage after the item leaves our care.
