The Royal Palace

Artist: Bengt Hedberg (1868-1953)

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Dimensions: 17” x 22.5”

This small, softly impressionistic landscape painting features the Royal Palace in Stockhom, Sweden. The scene shows a calm body of water in the foreground, painted with loose, horizontal brushstrokes in blues, greens, and muted browns that suggest gentle movement and reflections. Near the center-right of the water, a small fountain adds a quiet focal point.

On the right side, tall, dark, cypress-like trees and dense greenery create a vertical contrast against the horizontal flow of the water. Behind them stands a light-colored classical building with rectangular windows—its form simplified, almost softened by the painterly style.

In the distance to the left, low hills or a shoreline stretch across the horizon, with hints of rooftops nestled among greenery. The sky is pale and luminous, filled with blended strokes of blue, cream, and soft gray, giving it a breezy, atmospheric feel rather than sharp detail.

Overall, the painting feels tranquil and observational, capturing a serene moment in a park or riverside setting. The loose brushwork, subdued palette, and gentle contrasts give it a quiet, reflective mood—more about atmosphere than precise realism.

About the Artist: Bengt Hedberg (1868-1953) was the son of the writer Frans Hedberg and his wife Amanda (née Broman).

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1891 to 1898, followed by study trips to England and Scotland in 1903 and Germany and Italy in 1910–1911. Between 1907 and 1908 he was a board member of the artists' group De Frie. From 1911 Hedberg lived in Gränna and for a long time belonged to the artists' colony there. He devoted himself mostly to landscape painting, especially with motifs from Lake Vättern , in a realistic and atmospheric style. Hedberg is represented in the Thiel Gallery, the Nordic Museum, Uppsala University Library, and the National Museum in Stockholm, among others.

This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.
