The Village of Sandby borg
The Village of Sandby borg
Artist: Stig Jonzon (1913-1987)
Medium: Oil on Panel, signed 1958
Dimensions: 19” x 22”
Jonzon's approach with this painting is lyrical and atmospheric, with a palette of muted earth tones warmed by golden highlights, applied in thick, visible impasto strokes that capture light's diffusion through cloud. It's characteristic of his mature period (1950s–1960s), when he focused on Öland motifs—timeless, slightly nostalgic vignettes of rural life under dramatic skies. Comparable to his other island scenes (e.g., views of Alvedsjöbodar or Egby mills), this work conveys quiet resilience and the subtle poetry of everyday Swedish coastal existence, without overt sentimentality
About the Artist: The artist, Karl Stig Börje Jonzon (1913–1987), was a Swedish painter and draftsman born on the island of Öland, where he spent much of his life and drew inspiration for his landscapes. Trained under Ivan Hoflund in Kalmar (1931–1932) and during extended stays in Paris (1947–1950), Jonzon developed a style blending post-Impressionist looseness with regional Nordic restraint. His works often feature the windswept, luminous quality of Öland's coastal and rural scenes, as seen in this piece depicting Sandby borg, a medieval castle ruin near Sandby on Öland's southeastern shore.
This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.
All artwork is sold as found, and we always carefully photograph and highlight any notable signs of age.
