Summer Landscape

Artist: Gerhard Wihlborg (1897-1982)

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Dimensions: 22” x 35”

The vivid summer landscape is painted in a post-impressionist style with thick and wide brushstrokes that are loose and expressive rather than tightly detailed. Wihlborg’s use of bright and bold colors in abounding variety highlight the dynamism of the farm setting. Forms are suggested rather than precisely rendered. This technique, coupled with the wagon and animal details, gives the painting a lively, atmospheric quality typical of early 20th-century landscape painting. This painting brings an energetic type of whimsy to the forefront of the viewer’s mind.

About the Artist: Gerhard Wihlborg was a native from Skåne and is considered one of the most famous artists active at this picturesque region in Sweden. Wihlborg studied at the art academy in Stockholm in 1917/23 and then went on a trip to Italy, before he decided to establish himself in Ystad. His oeuvre includes still lifes, landscapes and portraits, of which some are preserved at the museums in Malmö and Kristianstad, today. This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.
