Windmill Garden
Artist: Arthur Percy
Medium: Oil on Panel, Dated 1944
Dimensions: 15” x 18”
The charming landscape is painted in an impressionist/post-impressionist style and is executed with visible, energetic brushstrokes that are loose and expressive rather than tightly detailed. Percy uses broken color and dappled light effects, especially in the foliage, to capture the shimmering quality of leaves and sunlight. Forms are suggested rather than precisely rendered while the windmill is simplified, and the trees are built up with blocks of color and quick strokes. This technique gives the painting a lively, atmospheric quality typical of early 20th-century landscape painting. The painting has a very pleasant, harmonious balance between the man-made element (the windmill) and the abundant natural vegetation surrounding it.
About the Artist: Arthur Percy (1886–1976) was a prominent Swedish artist and designer, renowned for his pivotal role in the 20th-century Swedish ceramics and glass. As artistic director for Gefle Porslinsfabrik (1923–1958) and later at Gullaskruf, he modernized Swedish applied arts with elegant, functionalist designs. His work, often featured in major Swedish museums, is known for vibrant glazes and popular patterns like Vinranka.
This piece is in very good condition, consistent with its vintage age, with no obvious signs of wear.
