Yellow House in Provence
Yellow House in Provence
Artist: Eva Holmberg-Jacobsson,
Medium: Acrylic on Panel, dated -78
Dimensions: 16” x 19”
The work captures a sunlit Provençal landscape from the perspective of someone standing on a road or path, looking toward the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole—the same institution where Vincent van Gogh lived and painted The Starry Night nearly a century earlier. Holmberg employs a post-impressionist, expressive style with visible, tactile brushwork. Colors are intense and contrasting—acid yellows, fiery reds, deep greens—yet harmonized by the unifying warmth of Mediterranean light. The paint is applied in thick, gestural layers, especially in the trees and bushes, giving the surface a lively, almost three-dimensional texture. Forms are simplified and slightly abstracted, prioritizing mood over realism. Holmberg employs a post-impressionist, expressive style with visible, tactile brushwork.
The painting radiates quiet joy and sun-drenched serenity. Holmberg’s vision is calm and luminous. The bright colors and open composition evoke a sense of peace, nostalgia, and deep connection to the Provençal landscape. The cypress—symbol of eternity—remains, but here it stands in daylight, grounded and alive.
